HOW TO WRITE WELL

6 October 2008 121 views No Comment

People say that good speakers are usually bad writers. On the other hand, good writers are often bad speakers. The fact is, writing, just like any other skills can be acquired, learned, and therefore can be put into practice. By knowing the ABC’s of writing, one can start grabbing his pen and start scribbling.

For starters, it is a general principle to always BE YOURSELF when writing. Never allow an alter ego to be the voice for your topic. Like professional singers, what comes from the heart sends out the real message of your writing. Relax and simply let the idea flow naturally. And this usually happens after a number of discarded and deleted paragraphs. As a notable American writer William Zinsser said, “Never say anything in writing that you wouldn’t comfortably say in conversation”. And that is one fact that aspiring writers must always keep in mind.

Before anybody can start writing, there are sets of considerations that should be kept in mind. One is your audience – or your readers. Knowing who will read your articles will allow you to write at the ‘proper tone’. An average man or woman would not appreciate stiff or hard-hitting articles. Children will never appreciate anything written formally. Researchers might find humorous articles un-humorous. Good writing does not always necessarily mean reserved or flowery in nature, but it does mean appropriate or apt writing for any give situation or reader.

Second is to develop your own ‘personality ‘ or ‘voice’. Always select the appropriate words and always check hoe you organize your sentences. Outlining is a good tool to achieve this. Consistency is inevitable. Read your writings out loud and listen if the style used really sound consistent. A well-outline article will likewise help you achieve that level of consistency.

Imperfections are also good at the start of your writing. This will allow you to come up with several drafts until you come up with an article that will embody all necessary requirement and qualities. Polishing the article is also a good exercise to perk-up up your grammar skill and your vocabulary as well. The more you write, the less mistakes you’ll get.

Friends are also ‘useful’ when coming up with a good write-up. Allow them to read and be brutally frank about it. It is always best to seek a third party to criticize your work. For your final proof, find someone who can do it for you. It is not a good practice to proofread your own work, as you will only see what you choose to see, and believe what you choose to believe. Be thankful for corrections.

Lastly, enjoy what you have accomplished. Learn and love your articles. Your articles may be simple but they will always be a concrete proof of your thriving talent. Pen up!
