USEFUL STRATEGIES TO WRITE WELL
In a competitive world such as ours, having the ability to write well is an advantage. In an era of communication, your writing skills will empower you to succeed. Students need effective writing skills in almost every aspect of their scholarly life. Journalists need to convey the truth through their compelling articles. Technical writers have to get across through writings that can be easily comprehended by even the ordinary readers. Bloggers, yes, bloggers strive to earn the respect of their readers by adding authority and expertise to their writings.
Whatever the kind of writing is, and for whatever purpose you may have, there is one very important thing you have to bear in mind: what you write is what you intend to say. Your writing is a reflection of what you have in mind.
The following are useful strategies to write well:
- Keep your writing conversational, unless otherwise specified. Do not write anything that you would not be comfortable saying verbally, or in conversation. Let your ideas flow naturally.
- Be clear, concise, and coherent. Use simple words. Less is more but make sure you have covered all your points. Every word that you use should have its meaning and relevance. Never sacrifice clarity for style. Your writing should also be able to achieve its purpose and objectives.
- Always, always, check your grammar. Nothing can beat good grammar in writing. Never fall into the trap of using the texting language, no matter how appealing and convenient it may seem. The better your grammar is, the more chances your writing gets the attention it deserves. Master the basics of grammar. You can never go wrong with it.
- Be humane. Consider your readers. They should be able to get what you mean. As a responsible writer, you should care about your readers- what they feel with your writings. You do not have the right to insult your readers. Be compassionate, you never know what state of emotion or mind your readers are when consuming your writings.
- Think clear. This enables you to write clearly as well. And when your writing is clear, your readers benefit from it.
- When in doubt, don’t. Learn to respect words. If you are not sure about their meanings, consult the dictionary. Never use words that you are not familiar with. You can also form the habit of developing your vocabulary by learning one new word a day. Use what you learn liberally. You learn the language best when you use it.
- Don’t save the best for last. It’s prudent to give your readers your best idea at the onset. Nowadays, readers do not have much time going through all your writings in detail and deducing your best point. If you’ve got to give, you have to give it right away.
- Love your writing. Write about something that you feel about. Your love will make it more interesting and the process will be a breeze.
- Write, write, and write. Just as in any other skills, practice makes perfect. When you find yourself writing regularly, you discover your mastery of the skill and you develop your style. Whatever your style is, be sure to keep it natural.
- Master the rules of writing then learn when to forget about them. Rules are in place to guide; obeying or breaking them is your choice. Use your good judgment. Your writing, in spite and despite the rules, should have your stamp, your own voice. It’s okay to bend the rules or use them to fit your purpose as long as you are able to write what you mean to say.
To apply these strategies is also up to you. You can always find a hundred “how to” and a myriad ways why writing well is an essential tool for success nowadays. The choice is always yours. Just remember that if you find the strategies worth doing, then you’ve got to do them well.
