Write Effectively, Know Your Audience

Undeniably, there are writers who are trying hard in getting the impression that they are intelligent people or that they have a wide range of vocabulary. In some instances, perhaps, you have encountered essays or articles that you can hardly digest because of the jargons or polysyllabic words used. Jargons can be acceptable if a writer writes for a scientific journal, if for a popular newspaper, then this is not acceptable.

As a writer, you should know who your target audience is. Your target audience can be high school students, college students, mothers, doctors, etc. Each set of audience has specific characteristics that you should consider before thinking of a topic or writing your first draft. The words to be used should be in consonance with the lifestyle of the target audience. Why use political jargons if you are targeting children?

Keep in mind that your readers are the ones who will decide if your write-up has been effective, not yourself, and not just your friend. Effective writing entails a clear understanding of the target readers as this will be the basis of the treatment of the write-up.

As a common rule in writing says, “write to express, not to impress.” It is not always recommended to use words which are not part of the daily vocabulary of the people who will read your essay. This, in essence, puts your work into waste since no one will be interested to read it. A reader will not like to look ignorant of what he/she reads about. In this case, if these words seem inevitable, context clues can help in conveying the message you intend to send your readers.

In starting with your draft, it will help if you will analyze first what are the common interests of the people that you expect who will read your write-up. Make sure that you know to whom you are talking to for you to avoid walking aimlessly. You may analyze their lifestyle and their demographic characteristics to identify which approach will work well in the process of writing the draft.

Knowing your audience is of great help in producing effective outputs. Avoid putting your works into waste, make an effort of knowing your target audience.
