Write a Good Research Proposal

14 October 2008 194 views 2 Comments

A research proposal gives a reader an insight into how well a writer can prepare a written proposal. Therefore, it must be written well, including all of the information it needs to without going overboard; it needs to show the reader that the writer knows what they are doing, and that they are well prepared and knowledgeable in their subject.

To write a good research proposal, the writer must include the following things in their paper: title, abstract, introduction, literature review, methods, results, and a conclusion. Proper and thorough research must be applied to each of these sections so that the reader will feel confident with what you have written.

The title of the research proposal must be concise and descriptive without being too long; a subtitle can help with this. The title should also be catchy, as it will grab the reader’s attention. The abstract comes right after the title and is a one or two page summary of the research. It needs to include the research question, the importance of the study, and the methods that will be used. The introduction follows the abstract and consists of the background for the research problem. The introduction of the research proposal includes the problem at hand, the importance of the question, and the reasons as to why it is worth investigating. The independent and dependent variables need to be mentioned, as well as the theory and any definitions that the reader may not be aware of.

The literature review is comprised of summaries of the works of other authors that were used throughout the research proposal. This allows the reader to decide for themselves whether or not the sources used are relevant and loyal to the subject. Following this are the sections for the methods and the results, which goes into detail of the methods of research used and the final results that came from those methods. The conclusion sums everything up, including your own opinions and thoughts, as the writer.
