Developing a Research Proposal

A research proposal is a paper that will allow you and your reader to understand the importance of a research subject. Sometimes this document must be written and approved by your instructor before you begin to write and work on the actual research paper. This lets the instructor to decide whether or not the project will be worth the time, effort, and resources, and if you have a good argument for it. This can help your researching in accordance to the plans set forth by you and your instructor and can save time in the long run.

In developing a research proposal, you first need to create a list of topics that you are knowledgeable in, or ones that you feel comfortable and confident in doing lengthy research on. It has to be a topic that is narrowed down from a larger topic, which will help when you do the research. It should also be a topic that can hold your interest throughout the duration of the assignment; otherwise your disinterest can show in your writing and research. After you have finished doing your research, you need to consider the extent of the actual research. Take into consideration the books, journals, and websites that might help you; if you cannot come up with enough resources, then you should consider changing your topic or narrowing it even further.

Finally, it is important to understand the formatting of the research proposal. The formatting allows the paper to be orderly and keeps you, the writer, and the reader on track. There are separate sections of the research proposal for that reason, otherwise things would not make proper sense and be disorganized. It is also easier to find a previous section in the paper should you or your reader feel the need to refer to something once more.
