How to Come Up With Dissertation Ideas

21 October 2008 354 views One Comment

Coming up with the topic for your dissertation is perhaps one of the more difficult tasks to undertake when you are doing your research paper. The first thing you need to consider when trying to figure out your topic is what knowledge that you know. Try to pick something that you are already comfortable with; not only will research be easier because you already know information on your topic, but you will be able to put your knowledge to some good use. You should make sure that the topic you settle on is interesting and will not bore you after some time.

Other ways of coming up with dissertation ideas is to look on the Internet. You can find lists of topics or you can view sample dissertations. Message boards and blogs that can be found on custom writing websites are also helpful places to get ideas. Surfing the Internet, especially if you already have a topic in mind, will help you to narrow down your topic to something smaller that can be easier to research. You can also look at past papers that you have done to see if anything calls to you.

Another way of picking your dissertation topic is by picking something you would like to learn more about, or something that you are not entirely filled in on. The two main things to keep in mind when you are picking your topic is that one, it is a topic that can be narrowed down, as this will give you more time to focus on one thing instead of many aspects of a larger item, and two, that it can hold your interest throughout the investigation. If you are unable to come up with a clear thesis statement, then you will need to reconsider your topic until you find something that can be summed up in just a couple of sentences.
